Beverly

Durham, NC

2023

Beverly is a thoughtfully designed dwelling addition for an elderly parent that harmoniously integrates with its primary residence in scale and detailing.
The site, located in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Durham, presented challenging constraints, including tight setback limitations, brush obstruction and removal, driveway regrading, and soil stabilization due to a steep drop in elevation along the backside of the home.
The heart of the project is an elevated screen porch, which joins the existing to the new. This space became the new extended family living room. Getting this connection precisely right was a worthwhile structural and site planning challenge. The elevated spaces allow for parking underneath the structures on both sides. And the fabulous views are matched by the excellent cross breeze. This project offers a seamless blend of privacy and connection that fosters independence for an elderly parent while maintaining close family ties.
